Running With Scissors
by: Brittany Muldoon
Pop punk newcomers hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio and Almaty, Kazakhstan, In Lights, are releasing their debut EP, Running with Scissors, at the beginning of July and listeners are in for a treat!
The EP starts off strong with the title track, “Running with Scissors.” Even within the first 10 seconds of the song, the great production quality is obvious and it only gets better from there. With well-written lyrics and a catchy melody, this song is the perfect hook to get fans to keep listening to the rest of the EP.
The next track, “One Year Down,” keeps the energy up but represents a change in subject matter from the first song. With a beat slightly reminiscent of Fall Out Boy’s “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes,” this track touches on the difficulty of being in a long-distance relationship. Then, “Play Your Cards Right, Kid” is another high-energy anthem that will remind fans of a more poppy version of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!
The track “Turn Tables” does a good job of closing the EP, leaving listeners with a good taste in their mouths. The EP is only has four songs but it will leave listeners begging for more. This exceptional first effort from In Lights displays their obviously talented lineup and does a good job of establishing their sound. As a new band, they definitely have room for growth and experimentation with their style of music, but this is an impressive debut. It is clear that In Lights has a lot more up their sleeve and we can’t wait to hear what’s next from them!
